Giving back too much?

“If you want to be miserable, think of yourself. If you want to live happily, think of others.”

– Sakyong Mipham

I’ve recently been told of being too generous for actions I’ve taken because of who I am. I think I crossed a fine line between trusting too much and being hurt too much. I’ve always had a social buffer where I would not go overboard and always be in the safe zone where I am familiar. Well, it backfired. Do I regret being vulnerable and trusting to an extent? Nope, I’ll let myself feel and contemplate. Isn’t that what makes me alive?

It takes more willpower to stop when pedestrians are crossing, letting others go first, holding the door for someone (not just for women), and following the rules when it seems like everyone else isn’t.

Coping Mechanism

I’ve been told by a wise man before when I was going through a breakup on how to cope up with emotional pain. It would be to acknowledge the pain and go through it, but don’t blame it. Things may not go as planned, but how I react to it solely depends on me. When I get hurt, I usually repress emotions and try my best to not let myself feel, but it isn’t a healthy thing to do. Nowadays, I journal and write to myself to talk about what happened and where I could do better. A beautiful habit that I don’t regret having.

5 Types of Pride

I’ve seen pride in various masks and here are some types of pride that wonderfully sums up what I’ve encountered from the book “Running with the mind of meditation”:

  1. From position or rank
  2. Wealth or possession
  3. Intellectual (what you know & your education)
  4. Prowess or youth or beauty
  5. Pride of thinking you don’t have pride

It is impossible for a person to not have pride, but having a badge of pride is usually where the knots tangle. Reflecting back on the actions and thoughts I’ve made also brings caution to the future me, and his actions.

So, what would I do about being myself? Well, I am still learning to not be fixated on what is wrong and start cultivating what is working. I know that life is full of beauty if I just look for it.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.
